Preventing cancer

Lots of applesHalf of all cancers could be prevented by changes in lifestyle. Prevention is a very important part of Cancer Research UK's work.

Some of the initiatives we are funding include:

  • Diet and cancer
Our large-scale population studies are looking at the role of the environment and diet in the development of cancer.

Diet is believed to be responsible for thousands of cases of cancer annually in the UK. The results of our studies could help to lower cancer incidence on a global scale.

  • Public awareness
We run awareness campaigns to inform people about the benefits of adopting a healthy lifestyle, including giving up smoking, having a balanced diet, covering up in the sun and exercising regularly.

  • Inherited cancers
We are studying the genes involved in inherited cancers, so that we can identify people at high risk and find ways of reducing their risk through screening and other pre-emptive methods.
